Recent work is inspired by encounters with the city of Venice, Italy. The powerful descriptive language of Joseph Brodsky’s Watermark, a collection of essays about Venice, exerted a strong influence on my own experience as an artist-in-residence there in Winter 2012-2013.
Reading Brodsky’s work prior to my residency, I was struck by the uncanny sensation of having memories of a place I was seeing for the first time.
Accordingly, my work fluctuates between first-hand representation, and quotation or re-telling, borrowing the nostalgic recollections of others.
2014 summer residency program at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica Venezia served as a foundation for the 2015 SGCI conference presentation.
